Rethinking Economics International is an international network of students, academics, and professionals building better economics in society and the classroom. Founded as a student movement in 2012, it has grown into a global youth movement focused on relearning, rethinking, and rebuilding economics.

2026 is a major year for communications at Rethinking Economics International. The Communications Lead will maintain existing communication channels while helping design and implement new systems to support organisational change, including the launch of a new brand, an individual membership programme, and governance changes.

You will act as the public voice of Rethinking Economics across social media, newsletters, website content, email journeys, and press, while supporting the delivery of REI’s communications strategy.

This role is offered at 4 days per week, with openness to job share arrangements (combined 4 or 5 days). Job share applicants must submit a single, joint application.

Key responsibilities:

Lead on external communications for Rethinking Economics International.

Manage the communications@rethinkeconomics.org inbox
Create, schedule, and manage content across social media platforms: Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn
Source content for and send the monthly newsletter
Produce, publish, and review website content, including the REI blog
Liaise with and recruit students, writers, designers, and video editors where needed
Oversee email journeys and write copy for the new membership offer
Own and manage press relationships
Support the creation and delivery of REI’s communications strategy
Support rollout of the new brand and redevelopment of rethinkeconomics.org

Requirements:

Applicants do not need to meet every criterion. Experience gained through voluntary work is welcomed. A background in economics, campaigning, or movement-building is an advantage.

Technical competencies & experience

Essential:

Fluency in English (written and spoken)
Social media management experience (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube)
Experience using email platforms (e.g. Action Network, Mailchimp) to mobilise supporters and send newsletters
Graphic design skills (e.g. Canva) for social media assets
Project management experience
Copywriting across social media, newsletters, website copy, and email journeys
Ability to proactively identify and use communications opportunities
Strong understanding of branding and the role of communications
Understanding of social media strategy and algorithms
Experience reporting on measurable communications outcomes

Desirable:

Fluency in a language other than English
Interest in and understanding of economics, particularly alternative and pluralist economics
Experience delivering training
Experience cultivating media relationships
Experience with WordPress or similar CMS
Experience building and managing online communities
Experience working with freelancers
Experience delivering communications for campaigning organisations
Experience working with volunteer organisers
Passion for reforming economics teaching and practice

Essential organisational competencies

Terms & conditions:

Reporting to: Associate Director
Start date: As soon as possible
Contract type: Fixed term (likely permanent after first year)
Hours: 4 days/week, 7 hours per day (unpaid lunch hour)
- Occasional evening/weekend work (time off in lieu provided)
- One working day must be Tuesday
