How do we make something ancient feel familiar again?

For Aneesha Grover, the answer lives in the body. In movement. In silent acts of return.

She began learning Bharatanatyam at seven. Since then, she’s performed across the world, her work anchored in one thing: to show that this tradition is not distant or foreign. Like many other ancient art forms, it carries something universal. And by experimenting with modern formats, she makes us remember.

More than a performer, Aneesha is a storyteller, using movement to reimagine cultural narratives. In 2024, she co-founded the Keelaka Dance Company with her guru, Jyotsna Shourie. Keelaka means “bond” or “friendship,” a name that speaks to a practice built in connection. The company is part of how Aneesha continues to keep tradition alive by letting it grow and move with the times.

“We have to experiment with different storytelling formats, different theatrical elements, different dance styles in order to give the uninitiated audience a fresh perspective of the dance,” says Aneesha, emphasizing the importance of reinvention in her work.

Her style is modern, but it's always rooted in tradition. She respects the past and uses it to create something new with real purpose, which is exactly what you see in her performances.

We open the first episode of COMMON HERITAGE with Aneesha in the same way she begins her work: with namaskaram.

Rooted in ritual

Every Bharatanatyam performance begins with namaskaram. A bow to the ground, a quiet act of reverence.

For Aneesha, it’s a way of showing humility and gratitude. She believes art transcends the individual.

Through this ritual, dancers honor the divine forces, ancestral wisdom, and the collective spirit that allow them to serve as vessels for expression. By beginning each performance with this gesture, they invite gratitude to shape every movement that follows.

From that grounded place, Aneesha moves outward.

The refusal to be defined by a single label, whether as a performer, mother, teacher, or entrepreneur, is a powerful reminder. Like the tradition being honored, an artist is always evolving.

Artists are often expected to stick to one style, one story, one version of themselves. But creativity doesn’t exist in one shape. It lives in motion, in multiplicity. It resists being contained.

And in Aneesha’s case, that motion is also a way of bringing something ancient into the present.

Art as an act of translation

Every time Aneesha performs, she translates ancient stories into the language of today.

Bharatanatyam holds layers of meaning: spiritual, emotional, cultural. But meaning must be communicated to endure. For Aneesha, this act of translation comes through experimentation: blending formats, bending conventions, and finding new ways for old stories to resonate.

One example: the Ramayana.

Unmasked by Keelaka Dance Company, which Aneesha wrote, produced, and performed in, is a time travel dramedy set in Treta Yug in Lanka during Ramayana. Anchored in the expressive language of classical Bharatanatyam, the production incorporates elements of modern dance, theater, and multimedia to translate an ancient text for today's audiences.

Unmasked invites us to re-examine notions of good and evil, agency and power. It challenges fixed narratives and surfaces the universal values embedded in the Ramayana, ones that continue to resonate in today’s conversations about identity, justice, and choice. In doing so, it reminds us that stories survive by being reimagined through each generation.

To translate something so ancient is no small act.

In Bharatanatyam, that translation unfolds slowly, gesture by gesture, as the hands begin to speak.

The language of hands

Mudras are intricate hand gestures that convey specific ideas, emotions, and objects. Even the subtlest movement of a finger can change a mudra’s meaning. Together with facial expressions, mudras play a vital role in enhancing the narrative depth of the performance.

And yet, mudras are only one part of a bigger picture. Every element of the performance adds its piece, until dance itself becomes a carefully composed collage.

It’s movement stitched with memory, emotion folded into form, faith expressed through the body. Fragments of tradition like mudra, ghungroo, and bindi are pieced together, each carrying its own meaning. On their own, they speak in parts. But together, they form a language that tells a story, one that is whole, alive, and continually remade.

This layering of form and meaning also reflects how we rediscover tradition. Not all at once, but over time.

Return and revelation

Balance doesn’t equate to sameness. When you go around something at a slow and steady pace, every turn becomes a revelation.

Your perspective changes with each new light and angle. The universe unravels itself.

This is how culture lives, in movement. In repetition and return.

Tradition isn’t static. Aneesha doesn’t treat it as a relic, but something alive, capable of holding history and transformation all at once.
