At KR Market, one of Bangalore’s oldest flower markets, color appears abundant, almost incidental. But on closer observation, it reveals itself as something assembled over time, shaped by ritual, practice, and instinct. This visual essay traces how it is tied together through systems of arrangement, spirals, sequences, and clusters.

A visit to one of Piet Oudolf’s gardens offered an unexpected shift in how I understood color. I was deeply moved by his work. I hadn’t experienced a space so sensorial, yet so deliberately constructed. I discovered that his focus lies in creating dynamic landscapes that shift through the seasons with perennial species. This approach is reflected in his belief that “structure is the most important component in a successful planting; color is important too, but it is a secondary consideration.”

It shifted my focus from color alone to the structure that held the landscape together.

After visiting his garden, I found myself searching for places closer to home that shared this quiet intentionality. That search led me back to KR Market, a place I hadn’t visited in nearly twelve years.

Arriving early in the day, the market unfolds through movement as much as material. Hands move quickly through piles of marigolds and roses, stems are stripped, flowers are sorted, and bundles take shape on the ground. The space is dense, humid, and constantly in flux, yet each action follows a rhythm that seems learned and repeated over time.

It made me appreciate the dexterity as well as the material intelligence sustained over generations in the KR Market. A friend who accompanied me observed that this particular skill set is not easily found in many parts of the country.

What appears informal or intuitive is shaped through years of labour, revealing a system that is both structured and sophisticated.

I began to read these gestures as systems of color, unfolding in three distinct ways.

Spirals

In the spirals, color reveals itself through rotation, showing how circular structure, not just hue, gives each cluster its depth and movement.

Sequences

In sequences, color takes its meaning from order, where repetition and spacing decide how each color field is understood.

Clusters

In clusters, color emerges through density, small units held closely together, forming compact pockets of intensity that mirror how flowers are sorted and grouped. The exposed green stems reveal the layer that remains hidden in the two other systems.

These systems are not fixed categories but ways of seeing, shaped by how material is handled and grouped within the market. Here, color is held together before dispersing across the city, carried outward into neighborhoods and homes with traces of its assembly. Over time, the material shifts, wilts, and loosens, exposing the temporality of these arrangements. The market extends beyond a site of exchange, becoming a place where color is constructed and set into motion across the city.

What persists here is a continuity that many urban spaces are rapidly losing, where color, craft, and daily labour follow inherited rhythms.

The handling of flowers, their sorting, sequencing, and arrangement, reveals an everyday design language passed down through generations. Each color, as well as assembly, carries its own purpose: devotional, celebratory, symbolic, or simply practical.

In many parts of the world, such labour is increasingly mechanized or forgotten, making the gestures here not just local practice but cultural knowledge at risk. By tracing how color is assembled through handwork, this study documents a form of intelligence that exists outside formal design training, yet continues to shape how a community expresses memory, ritual, and belonging.
