Luxury fashion houses today have formed an integral part of our cultural fabric, from filmmaking and funding contemporary and classical art, to providing university grants. Fashion has seeped into our daily visual consumption, sculpting our collective imagination. Artistic prizes backed by luxury conglomerates offer far more than prestige; they actively rewrite who gets seen, who gets supported, and which narratives enter the global canon.

As this canon has always been Eurocentric, it's interesting to observe the rise of international talent and the ways in which these prizes help redefine what culture can look like.

The link between luxury and the arts is a historical one in Europe, with patronage in the arts dating back to the 15th century. Fashion and art have also long been intertwined - from Mondrian and Yves Saint Laurent to Schiaparelli and Dali. Identifying and associating with talent which is original and uncommon for the sociopolitical times creates the most interesting cultural associations. These values are widely shared with art and multidisciplinarity in general - eccentricity, questioning, and originality.

Inherent to the nature of the practice, it makes sense that luxury houses today are funding independent artists from underrepresented communities in our increasingly globalised world. Awarding prizes and grants to members of the diaspora gives them the resources to develop their work - Grace Wales Bonner won the LVMH prize in 2016, and 9 years later she is creative director of Hermes menswear - allowing for her nuanced, academic, and hybrid approach to design to be expressed at one of the most prestigious brands in the world.

Luxury houses are modern day tastemakers, with both the responsibility and privilege of platforming the next generation of artistic voices. On the last day of the Arles Photography Festival, I visited the Luma museum and was told to see the Dior photo prize semi-finalists. Cutting through the visual overload of the entire week, was the arresting work of prize winner, Joyel Quason. His moving image invited reflection in a simple and yet enchantingly hypnotic way - the repetition of ‘how do you feel?’ almost a real time meditation. The raw, vulnerable portrayal of his story is palpable in his own way of speaking. His rhetorical questions follow the double identity of going out - then coming home and taking it all off - hiding his sexuality from his family. The Dior photo prize grant and visibility has catapulted his journey, which is a long one. “Your time will come, have patience,” he advises. After 6 years of practice, he recognises the immense opportunity of exhibiting at the Maison Europeene de la Photographie in Paris (MEP) this year.

Whilst the trickle down effect of grant giving from university level is one that takes many years to come to fruition, it ensures relevance across generations. Supporting mid-career designers creates opportunities and visibility in the short term - but such support can go far and wide.

Supporting talent from around the world therefore helps to de-centralise western narratives. It questions the legitimacy of institutionalised design itself - the hierarchy of design - instead championing innovation that happens daily in the hands of locals. Nifemi is building a book shop, library, and a series of ongoing projects in Lagos, going beyond just one time production to creating artistic ecosystems and empowering communities - a virtuous loop of sorts.

Using the platform to question the platform itself makes prize-giving a fertile ground for originality.

It pushes the conversation forward on what craft can really mean from a global perspective, making place for real cultural dialogue between countries around the world.

This is even more relevant at a time where cultural capital has become as important as material possessions. Fashion houses and cultural institutions recognise that it is more about narrative and storytelling than accumulation - collectors want meaning rather than logos and fanfare. It's not just about selling, but learning.

Since the very conception of Haute Couture, India was used as inspiration and as a workshop - artisans beading, sewing, embroidering clothes which were then assembled in France and labelled as “haute couture”. Yet the shift in recent years to recognising the Indian main d’oeuvre comes less as appreciation but more as a strategy to capture the growing spending power of the Asian continent. The Prada chappals and Louis Vuitton lungis remain as recent examples of gross cultural appropriation, but these same houses platforming design talent through schemes like the LVMH prize help redirect the narrative in the hands of the creators themselves, giving back agency in a system long controlled by the same names and faces.

On the other side of the world - luxury houses are stepping in as the new patrons of art, reshaping visibility, access, and cultural legacy - which feels especially relevant for regions like India. Instead of grants and support being limited to a handful of galleries and institutions, luxury brands and conglomerates could gain immensely by giving back and supporting critical conversations with the next generation of talent, nurturing deep relationships with artists for long term collaboration and global conversation, instead of momentary outputs.
