More than deciding what we see online, algorithms now also quietly decide what gets created. In today’s digital landscape, every artist feels that invisible pressure. Painters, poets, filmmakers, animators, photographers; no matter the medium, creativity now enters a silent competition against an unceasing stream of content.

Will the work you poured yourself into find people, or will it vanish into the feed?

It’s a strange new tension, creating not only for expression, but also for visibility.

The algorithm’s double-edged sword

To be fair, algorithms have opened doors that once felt locked shut. Platforms like Instagram and YouTube have given artists visibility far beyond galleries, publishers, and gatekeepers. A short reel can transform an unknown animator into a viral sensation, or a poet’s words, once tucked away in journals, can now reach hundreds in seconds.

In India, this shift has been especially visible in indie music. Artists like Anuv Jain, Yashraj Mukhate, King, and Maithili Thakur have broken into the mainstream largely because of Instagram Reels and the way these platforms reward shareable content. For many of them, social media didn’t just create visibility, it replaced the need for traditional industry gatekeepers altogether.

That accessibility is real, and for some artists, it’s life-changing. But it comes with a cost: once art starts being filtered through what works best for the feed, it risks losing the very stillness and depth that made it meaningful in the first place.

Art vs content

Content is optimized. Quick, bite-sized, engineered to catch attention before the next swipe.

Art is different. It demands time, space, stillness. A painting can’t always be condensed into a fifteen-second process video. A short film doesn’t exist to fit within sixty seconds. A verse shouldn’t need hashtags to find its voice. Art shouldn’t have to bend itself into formats designed for consumption.

When art is forced into the same containers as content, something gets lost. The line blurs and the art itself is reshaped not by inspiration, but by what the feed rewards.

Creativity doesn’t follow a posting schedule

Here’s where the tension deepens: creativity doesn’t move in straight lines. It comes in waves. Unpredictable, messy, and often slow. No artist, no matter the discipline, can churn out meaningful work every single day on schedule.

And yet, platforms reward daily output. They push for consistency over quality, frequency over depth. For artists like me, this clash has been personal. I don’t have a large following, and when I don’t post daily, the work I do share often sinks without a trace. Some of my favorite pieces, the ones I felt most connected to, barely made it past a few likes from existing followers.

For the longest time, I mistook that silence as a reflection of my art’s worth, and even my worth as an artist.

Now imagine that feeling multiplied across thousands of voices, work lost not because it lacks value, but because it doesn’t fit a platform’s timetable. Each platform plays by its own formula:

Instagram prioritizes reels, consistency, and quick engagement within the first hour.
TikTok scans for completion rates, trending sounds, and interaction.
YouTube rewards watch time and click-through.

All of it is engineered to maximize retention, to keep users scrolling. Not to nurture creativity. For artists, it’s like playing a game where the rules were never meant for you. And when you lose, it feels personal, even though it isn’t.

The looming challenge: AI art

Now, with the rise of AI-generated work, the stakes grow even higher. The algorithm doesn’t care whether a human spent months on a painting or whether a machine generated something in seconds. It only measures performance. AI models are trained on vast datasets scraped from the internet, including artworks created by human artists, often without their consent or compensation. The result is a system where the speed, scale, and algorithmic appeal of machine-generated work can overshadow the care, skill, and originality of human creators.

Creators are seeing their unique styles replicated by AI tools without acknowledgment. Lawsuits have emerged against major platforms like DeviantArt, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion, highlighting the ethical and legal questions around consent and authorship. Some artists have even tried countermeasures, embedding “invisible” alterations in their works to prevent AI from copying them. Yet despite these efforts, the algorithm’s loyalty is to retention and virality, not to the artist’s vision.

If we’re not careful, human creativity risks being sidelined in favor of faster, cheaper, algorithm-approved alternatives. It forces a reckoning: how do we protect the value of human art in a world where a machine can churn out style, but not soul?

We can’t ignore the algorithm, it’s the cultural gatekeeper of our time. But we can resist letting it define our worth or dictate our practice.

That means creating without tying value to numbers. Letting art be art, even if it doesn’t “perform.” Supporting one another in community, sharing each other’s work so it doesn’t get buried, and carving out spaces where slow, vulnerable, unpolished creativity still matters.

Content disappears with the next swipe. Art lingers, unsettles, heals, provokes. If we let the algorithm reduce everything to content, we risk losing not only visibility, but the soul of why we create.

The algorithm may be rewriting the rules, but art has always been about breaking them.

And that’s how it will survive, if we choose to let it.

Detaching identity from the feed

Ask yourself why you made something before you ask how it will perform. Create for curiosity, emotion, or reflection, not engagement. Stop letting numbers dictate value. A post’s reach doesn’t determine its worth, or yours, it just reflects how well it fits into the system’s current preference. Redefine what ‘success’ is. Ten people who feel your work are more valuable than ten thousand who scroll past it. Depth of impact > breadth of exposure.

Think of social media as a delivery tool. Build outside the feed: newsletters, Are.na, print zines, exhibitions, collectives, even small online communities. Spaces like these value archives, dialogue, and meaning over metrics. Collaborating with other artists also reintroduces community, something tech can’t replicate or quantify. Make the algorithm your subject. Turn critique into art. Expose, parody, remix the system that tries to flatten creativity. When you make art about the algorithm, you reclaim agency over it.

We don’t have to reject technology, only the part of it that tries to define us. The algorithm can predict trends, but it can’t predict truth. And as long as we keep choosing intention over optimization, there’s still something deeply human left in the act of creating.
