EMERGENT: an audiovisual set exploring the concept of “intelligence” as it manifests in the digital realm; using experimental electronic music, generative visual worlds, and AI-driven processes.
Expected Impact
Contemporary discourse around Technology and the advent of AI has arguably reached a saturated culmination. Amidst the chatter, many commentaries in the public sphere, be they critical or celebratory, often focus their lens only on the technical, the professional, the social or the ethical implications. Our focus under Ayahi has been to explore technology driven new media, but with our gaze towards Indian knowledge, culture, and heritage – where and how can it assume a place within India’s artistic arc? This inquiry needs a deep research driven foundation – it would not be enough to make direct and superficial connections by translating styles, stories into this new medium. We recognise the necessity to go deeper into both domains and construct something from there, a new perspective creating new art for new media. EMERGENT was born from this impetus, a necessity to go deeper into both domains and construct something from there, creating truly 'new art' for 'new media'. Having been prototyped and showcased as a work in progress, it has had an overwhelmingly positive reception, not just from a new audience, but from respected peers and practicing professionals in the field. The larger goal is to reframe our understanding of contemporary tools, media, services, and processes that are integrated into our daily lives, offering the possibility to explore alternative perspectives to the future we are in the process of building together as a human society; redefining not just the Indian cultural landscape, but through that unique lens, redefine global and conventional perspectives of the theme as well.
Applicant Background
We are Mrityunjay Sathyanarayanan & Vinay Khare, creative professionals in India from two diverse fields — music/creative art, and technology/digital art, respectively. Our practices converge at Āyāhi, with each bringing our work experiences - international and local - from our respective fields: Composition, electro-acoustic ventures in sound art, electronic music production; working with Western chamber ensembles, orchestras, collaborating with musicians, dancers, directors, teaching, musicological & theory research - has been Mrityunjay's bread and butter for the past decade. Interactive art installations, immersive experiences and bespoke creative tech solutions, for brands, agencies, artists are the type of commercial projects Vinay has been working on. Together, our collective experience spans audiovisual performances, interactive installations, and immersive experiences, across India, and collaboratively, abroad. (More in the pitch deck) Specific to this project, early iterations of EMERGENT has been showcased as a live audiovisual performance in G5A Theatre, Mumbai, as HYPERREAL, in April, then followed by a revised and updated performance on June 21st, at the EyeMyth Media Arts festival in Mumabi. Both reflect our ability to bring this project to life, and carry it forward.
