Delhi Houses

Delhi

Project Description

Delhi Houses is an archival project documenting modernism through the vernacular architecture of the capital city. Modern architecture is the most endangered heritage of India currently.

Expected Impact

It will document modern design and intangible stories of urbanism through the story of the people of the city and their patronage in building the urban landscape of the city one house at a time.

Applicant Background

I am an archaeologist who has worked with the Archaeological Survey of India. I am an Oxford Scholar and a contemporary art curator/cultural consultant. My mission of documenting modern Delhi Houses from the late 1800 to 2011 is rooted in putting an archaeological lens to modernism that is being taken over by post contemporary builder architecture and the south asian story of vernacular architecture of Indian cities is rapidly being obliterated. The story of the architecture fans into deeper understanding of ecology, material, human history and local patronage. This project aims to capture all those stories one house at a time.
