All That We Saw

Project Description

My project is an essay film based on the text “All That We Saw” by Amitesh Grover in which he posits a future where all the images have disappeared. Production started in 2024 before being halted.

Expected Impact

This essay film can be seen almost as a work of fan-fiction, developing and projecting a personal connotation through film onto the short fiction text. It will reflect modes through which I have been thinking about images, which are constantly in dialogue with the present condition. It is my hope that the essay film can produce a playful encounter between an audience and “the idea of the image” which sparks meditation on themes of media, modes of consumption and memory. Some of the themes I believe it explores are the ubiquity of images, their connection to memory and identity, the role of authorities in regulating the circulation of images, the vulnerability of images to threats (such as digital viruses, corrupt hard disks, weathering, and supernatural elements), the invisible interconnectedness of images, the power of images to offend, and the role of archives in preserving images.

Applicant Background

I am a professional free-lance sound recordist, composer, sound designer and podcast producer working full-time in this field since 2021. During this time, I have had the opportunity to work with on video and film projects for arts and culture clients such as The Registry of Sarees, Bangalore International Centre, Sher-Gil Sundaram Arts Foundation, Luru Magazine, Mythic Society etc. as well as corporate clients. In addition, I have worked with artists in a technical capacity towards realising exhibitions and media works since 2014, including IFA funded projects and exhibits at Serendipity Arts Festival. The team that I intend to employ towards the completion of this project will be drawn from a pool of regular and talented collaborators that I work with, who are all based out of Bangalore, where I am based. Many of them have already contributed their labour and creativity pro-bono towards this project. My personal practice in sound, noise, ensemble performance and music is influenced by artefacts of distribution, storage, reproduction and the recording medium itself. In most of this work, I am explicitly building on the works of others, made visible through interweaving my works heavily with sampling, excerpts, cuttings and other found objects.
